Matthew C. Fitzgerald
President and Chief Financial Officer of Luminary Capital, LLC
“Every drop of water shapes the stone.” How true. Coming up fast on the milestone age of 50, I can reflect on many experiences that have brought me where I am today, the founder and principal partner of a company dedicated to wealth management for families. You might think the most important influence on my business outlook would be my history in the financial services industry—over 26 years with two of the biggest names around. It isn’t.
I grew up in a family of five kids. My father had a good job and we knew the luxury of a stay-at-home mom, but we were not wealthy. My parents were naïve about finances and lived paycheck to paycheck. Even at a young age I knew there had to be a smarter way to manage money, and I set about to find it. I started my first business when I was 13, The Groundskeeper. It wasn’t long before I was hiring other kids to mow the lawns and clip the hedges while I lined up new accounts, kept the books, and began investing the earnings. This marks the beginning of my appreciation for entrepreneurs in our society.
When I went to university, Canisius College in Buffalo, New York, I earned a bachelor's degree in finance and financial management services. (I went back years later for some graduate-level classes in macroeconomics and organizational behavior.) After I graduated in 1989 I decided I wanted to work at Merrill Lynch because they had an outstanding training program for financial advisers. Competition was stiff and they turned down my request for an interview, saying their preference was for more seasoned candidates with some background in commerce. Cue The Groundskeeper! I got in.
From my initial position as a financial adviser in Merrill’s Buffalo office, I was promoted in May 1993, at age 25, to resident manager of the Merrill Lynch office in Jamestown, New York. Five years later I transferred to their Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, office to form the FKS Financial Advisory Practice. In November 2000 I returned to management, becoming sales manager of the Merrill Lynch Central Penn Complex, overseeing six offices and 150+ employees. Having passed the prestigious Merrill Lynch Assessment Center in November 2001 I then served as an associate director for the Main Line Central Penn Complex, comprising 10 offices and over 300 employees, from 2002-04 until I returned to my true passion of full-time financial advisory in January 2005.
In September 2008 I joined Morgan Stanley Wealth Management in the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, office as senior vice president/senior portfolio manager. There I worked with many high-net-worth families and small business owners for nearly eight years until leaving to start Luminary Capital.
My education and training in the financial services industry has been first rate. Accordingly, I have a current FINRA (Finance Industry Regulatory Authority) registration, and I’ve passed the following important securities industry exams:
Principal/ Supervisory Exam
General Securities Sales Supervisor Examination (Options Module & General Module) - Series 8
General Industry/ Product Exam
General Securities Representative Examination - Series 7
Futures Managed Funds Examination - Series 31
State Securities Law Exam
Uniform Securities Agent State Law Examination - Series 63
Uniform Investment Adviser Law Examination - Series 65
I am also licensed in both Pennsylvania and New York as a life and health insurance agent. Luminary Capital, LLC, itself is registered as an investment adviser with the state securities authority in Pennsylvania and New York.
In my career I have managed investment portfolios totaling upwards of $250 million. Most importantly, I have great enthusiasm for helping families achieve prosperity through sound financial planning and wise investments. In sum, I am well qualified and eager to act as your family’s Chief Financial Officer. Custodian for Luminary Capital:
Pershing LLC, a Bank of New York Mellon Company
Pershing LLC provides Luminary Capital clients with custody services. Their role primarily involves the safekeeping of electronic-record registrations of client assets: our custodian holds securities on your behalf to lessen the risk of them being lost or stolen. By law, Pershing cannot use assets in custody for its own ends, and all assets under custody at Pershing are kept segregated from the firm’s own. Pershing will provide you with monthly statements and tax reporting.
Owing to the nature of their fiduciary responsibility, financial custodians are generally large, highly reputable firms. We chose Pershing because it is a division of one of the oldest and largest banking institutions in the United States─Bank of New York Mellon. The Bank of New York was founded in 1784 by Alexander Hamilton. It merged with Mellon Financial Corporation in 2007. As of 2016, Bank of New York Mellon is both the world's largest deposit bank and the world's largest custodian bank, having over $28 trillion of assets under its custody and/or administration.
Pershing targets “professionally managed, growth-oriented advisory firms serving clients with complex financial lives.” They presently oversee assets totaling approximately $1.5 trillion. The firm is a broker-dealer registered with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, all 50 states as well as the District of Columbia and Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and certain foreign jurisdictions. They are also a member of the Securities Investor Protection Corporation. Their affiliation with Bank of New York Mellon helps ensure a safe harbor for your investments, and their service structure and technology platforms promise a seamless transaction experience for Luminary Capital and our clients.
Broker-Dealer Platform for Luminary Capital:
Motif Investing, Inc., is a registered broker-dealer and a member of the Securities Investor Protection Corporation. Motif provides independent financial advisers such as Luminary Capital with a cost-efficient, online trading platform for stocks and exchange traded funds (ETFs) consisting of stocks, bonds, commodities, and more. Pershing LLC acts as the firm’s clearing partner to provide customers with cost-basis and proceeds documentation.
In the company’s lingo, a “motif” is a collection of up to 30 securities selected and weighted to reflect a highly customized investment theme. Motif’s pioneering concept-driven trading platform has attracted big-name investors Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase; board members include former Securities Exchange Commission Chairman Arthur Levitt and former Boston Consulting Group Chairman Carl Stern.
